Nowadays, Language Technology is mainly concerned with major languages, especially in Europe. This leads to a strong pressure to use the local, standardized, so-called "high" languages in each country, sometimes even a foreign language that was only learned in school. This is mostly caused by the lack of hardware (e.g. keyboards) and software (for transliteration, text completion, etc.) for minor languages, which constrain the natural usage of people's mother language in many tasks. We do not want to limit ourselves to trying to counter that development by developing the necessary LT tools for local and minor languages and dialects - but our goal is also to turn that process in exactly the other direction: every successful technology can also be used to teach, revitalize and therefore boost the use of regional languages in Europe and the rest of the world.
