Here at OpenCog, we're creating an open source Artificial General Intelligence framework, intended to one day express general intelligence at the human level and beyond. That is: We're undertaking a serious effort aimed at building a thinking machine. We have a detailed plan and the ability to execute it, and we're proceeding with the hard work step by step. For example, OpenCog is being used by Xiamen University to control a Nao robot, and OpenCog is also being used as the cognition engine behind virtual pets in online worlds. OpenCog is also an umbrella project for several narrow AI projects: RelEx, PLN, and MOSES. Why are we using Flattr? The ambitious nature of the project and the failed history of prior AI projects with similar lofty goals mean that seeking funding is difficult. We feel there are enough people interested though, that micropayments will hopefully allow us to continue making progress. Small commercial projects help, but they detract from solving general cognition as the solutions become too specialised (due to the necessity of completing commercial work by certain deadlines!) More
