The Café Society works in the Woods, Zürich, on the topic of on-screen reading/writing. We create frameworks – rulesets – based on how reading, writing and organisation of textual information could work differently. As our reading habits change, so must our writing habits and the way we communicate, and ultimately the way we think. Authoring is becoming curating, and the expression of the in-between gains importance over content.
The development of information technology (as many other areas of society) has always been
governed by technical advancement and efficiency, and it's time for that to change. The screen being a completely visual medium – an image surface, continously redrawn – it's only fair that the mechanics of its contents be influenced by visual thinkers. As graphic designers (among other things) we approach the challenge of information organisation from a visual point of view; how is A really related to B, and how can we show that visually? Good question, and most probably there is no right answer. But instead of surrendering to an ISO standard of efficiency, we want to enable new kinds of expression, and make them relevant.
Most of our projects take the shape of functional software, but we are no software company. We build interactive ideas, for new ideas to sprout. Each of our projects contain questions, suggestions and discussions, and it is in this climate we thrive.
